New Zune HD update due in a couple of weeks

Forgotten about the Zune HD? We’re not surprised. With all the Windows Phone 7 news lately, a lot of people have forgotten about it. But fear not, Microsoft is about to release an update to it, version 4.5.

Mary Jo Foley received an email from a Zune spokesman, who gave her this information on the update.

* Smart DJ on Zune HD: “We added ‘Smart DJ’ to the Zune software last fall and now we’re bringing this popular music discovery feature (and instant playlist creator) to the Zune HD device.” According to Microsoft, “if you have a Zune Pass music subscription it will pull music from your existing collection and the Zune Marketplace catalog to create the mix. If you don’t have a Zune Pass subscription you can still use Smart DJ to build a playlist from the collection on your device.”

* Picks on Zune HD
: Picks is another music recommendation feature in the Zune software which Microsoft is making available on the Zune HD device. “The Picks algorithm analyzes what you listen to and compares that to millions of other Zune users to make personalized recommendations. With this update, you’ll be able to access these automatic recommendations directly on the Zune HD device as well as on your PC,” the Softies explain.

* Browse and Stream Music from Zune Marketplace on your TV: Using the Zune HD A/V dock, you can connect your Zune HD to your TV to play your favorite videos and music from your device on the big screen. With the 4.5 update, users also will be able to browser and stream music from Zune Marketplace directly on their TVs.

* Expanded Video Codec Support: With expanded support to include MPEG-4 Part 2 Advanced Simple Profile (ASP), which includes Xvid and AVI support, users can access broader range of video content natively on Zune HD with no transcoding required.

The update will be available for free download in a couple of weeks. Stay tuned!

Geohot warns PS3 users not to upgrade

Geohot, famous PS3 and iPhone hacker, is warning users of his PS3 exploit not to upgrade to the latest 3.21 upgrade for older PS3s.

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat’s Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that’s how you want to play…

Geohot also created a previous blog post as a sort of rant about Sony removing the Other OSes feature from older PS3s, a feature that put it ahead of its Slim brothers. How his new exploit will exactly work is still a mystery, so we will have to wait and see.

Older PS3 models to lose alternate OS support

No, this is not some crude April Fools’ Day joke: older PS3 models, ahead by the Slim models in the sense of being able to install alternate operating systems, will now lose that feature due to an upgrade on April 1st.

The US Playstation Blog talks about the update. Even though the feature is apparently being removed for “security reasons”, PS3 users running alternate OSes can choose not to upgrade. However, by skipping the upgrade, those users will not be able to connect to Playstation Network and play some popular titles online.

Review: Cloudica.net

Cloudica.net is a brand new micro-blogging service that works a lot like the extremely-popular Twitter.com. The only difference is that Cloudica is what Twitter is supposed to be.

Cloudica allows you, like Twitter, to create a free account at cloudica.com/yournamehere. You can post status messages and subscribe to other users’ profiles. However, you have no limit in the amount of characters you can put in your status. There are also easy tools in Cloudica that allow you to easily share a link, picture, or video to the world.

Also, unlike Twitter, you can comment on statuses. This is a feature that I find extremely useful, because on Twitter, I have to go back to the homepage and check @ replies to me. Also, Cloudica has a Notifications panel which allows you to track who’s replied to a status of yours, subscribed to you, and more.

Overall, JCXP gives Cloudica 5/5, and the coveted Recommended Product badge. Great product, guys!

Be sure to subscribe to me, Matt, Eric, Iian, and JCXP on Cloudica.

Pwn2Own Day 1: IE8, Firefox, and Safari exploited

If you use IE8, Firefox, or Safari for your current web browser, be warned. Yesterday was the first day of Pwn2Own, a contest in which skilled hackers attempt to find exploits in technological items in order to win money. IE8, Firefox, and Safari all have exploits, revealed at the contest, that allow a hacker to gain control of your PC.

For the second time, hacker “Nils” found an exploit in the latest version of Firefox, previously unknown. Charlie Miller found yet another exploit in Safari, allowing a hacker to gain control. Finally, Dutch hacker Peter Vreugdenhil hacked into a fully-patched and protected Windows 7 machine through the latest version of IE8. Chrome was not tested that day.

HP EliteBook 8740w sports i7 and USB 3.0

The new EliteBook 8740w from HP is one of the most high-end laptops available on the market right now: for one, it sports Intel’s Core i7 processor. Also, it has USB 3.0.

You’ll get either the Quadro FX 2800M, Quadro FX 3800M or FirePro M7820 graphics cards when you purchase it. The RAM is expandable up to 16GB, and it also includes built-in support for EVDO- or HSPA-based 3G. The DVD drive can be upgraded to a Blu-Ray drive.

HP is currently shipping the 8740w in the U.S., but expects to be shipping worldwide by April. Pricing starts at $1,999, but we’re not entirely sure what processors this includes and what specs this starts with.
