HP throws in the towel on the Slate

HP is rumoured to have cancelled the Slate tablet computer, according to TechCrunch.

The Slate was supposed to be a tablet computer running Windows 7 and competing with the iPad; in fact, it was announced at about the same time as the iPad. Steve Ballmer announced the tablet at CES 2010. Although a reason wasn’t stated, the cancellation could be because of poor battery life or bad user experience.

With the recent Palm aquisition, HP could be planning a webOS tablet, something that would be better than a full blown Windows 7 tablet. But only time will tell.

Steve Jobs’s thoughts on Flash

Steve Jobs has published a letter detailing Apple versus Adobe, and why Flash on the iPhone and iPad would not be a good idea.

Jobs explains that Apple does not have any problem with Adobe, and how he met the founders of Adobe. He then talks about Flash on the iPhone OS. Jobs explains that Flash on the iPhone would do more harm than good, and how Flash applications might not even work on the iPhone. In the end, he explains why HTML5 and modern Web technologies are best for the platform. You can read the letter after the break.

Yep, HP paid quite a big sum of money for Palm: $1.2 billion, to be exact. The deal is supposed to close on July 31st, Palm’s third quarter. Also, John Rubinstein is “expected to remain with the company,” although it may not be as CEO. We’ll post more as we get it.

UPDATE: Engadget has a nice liveblog post here.

Windows Live Messenger for iPhone screenshots leaked

Neowin has just released some screenshots of a beta of Windows Live Messenger for iPhone.

The app will supposedly arrive in June, the same month that Wave 4 is set to be released. It’s obviously made by Microsoft, and the screenshots look good so far.

According to Neowin’s screenshots, there’s support for photo sharing, chat, and a “social stream”, which will undoubtedly be Twitter and Facebook integration.

Well, here’s a gallery so you can take a look for yourself!

No longer a Nexus One for Verizon?

Google has just updated its Nexus One website with some new and curious information.

Now, instead of a message telling Verizon users of the Verizon Nexus One being released in Spring, they are now greeted by the following message:

For Verizon’s network, you can buy the Droid Incredible by HTC, a powerful Android phone and similarly feature-packed cousin of the Nexus One.

This leaves a big question behind: Does that mean that the Verizon Nexus One is no more? We will have to wait and see. For now, Verizon users will have to stick to the Droid Incredible, as the message states.

YouTube in the Pay Per View Business

A new link on YouTube has been discovered by PC World. It takes you to a page where you can rent full-length movies from YouTube. YouTube has not officially announced this service yet. Prices range from $1.99 for older releases and $3.99 for new releases,  and movies are available for 24hrs after purchase. It seems like a good idea, but how will it fair against services like Netflix, Blockbuster, iTunes, and other movie streaming services?

Xbox 360 Slim rumoured to be included in a Natal bundle

According to TechRadar, the new Project Natal motion control system is set to be included with a slimmer and rebranded version of the Xbox 360.

According to the blog of “Surfer Girl”, a well-known rumour source, a slim Natal bundle is set to be revealed by Microsoft in E3 of this year. “Surfer Girl” also says that Microsoft is making the console black because they “feel that the new system needs to be black because a white Natal wouldn’t sit well next to the typical gloss black tv”.

Although all just rumours right now, this could very well be true, so stay tuned!

Windows Live coming to Mac?

Windows_Live_h_web By now, I’m sure most of you know all the talk that has been going around about the next update to Microsoft’s Web Service platform, Windows Live, but the little information we have heard doesn’t include anything really related to the Mac platform.

According to LiveSide however, there is a little bit of information trickling down about the future of Windows Live on the Mac and what we are to expect. In the post, they mentioned a post from “My Microsoft Life” that referenced to some information about the changes going on within the Essentials Suite, and the fact that it would be available for Windows (nothing new there), Mac and also on the phone (assuming we’re talking Windows Phone).

In a tweet, made by a reader from LiveSide, Lituus states:

WLE for Mac to bring Messenger & Sync, along with Skydrive plug-ins for iMovie & iPhoto? Writer remains exclusive to PCs

Interesting, I suppose we’ll have to see what happens.
